Accelerating Climate Innovation at Greenlyte Carbon Technologies: Building an AI-Powered Data Platform for Direct Air Capture

Greenlyte Carbon Technologies, a pioneering startup in Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, partnered with DataMax to revolutionize their experimental workflows. This collaboration aimed to accelerate the development of scalable carbon capture solutions by harnessing real-time data and AI-driven insights from their pilot plants.

DataMax helped Greenlyte build a modern data lakehouse platform that captures real-time sensor data, enables advanced analytics, and leverages AI to predict experimental outcomes, this way accelerating the path from laboratory innovation to industrial-scale climate solutions.

Challenge

As Greenlyte scales their innovative DAC technology from pilot plants to commercial deployment, they faced the critical challenge of optimizing their carbon capture process through rapid experimentation. The pilot facilities generate vast amounts of real-time sensor data, measuring flow rates, humidity, temperature, and pressure across multiple stages of the CO2 absorption and hydrogen production process. The team runs many experiments to find the best process settings, and they're constantly looking for ways to learn faster from their data.

The challenge was that data lived in different systems, and bringing it together for analysis took time and effort. Each experiment had to finish before the team could see results and start the next one. With ambitious goals to scale their technology, they wanted a platform that would connect all their data sources in one place, spot patterns across experiments, and predict outcomes earlier, helping them move from pilot plant to commercial scale faster.

Solution

Recognizing that data-driven transformation would be essential to accelerate insights creation and gathering via rapid experimentation, Greenlyte partnered with DataMax to build a comprehensive data platform from the ground up. Our mission was to create a state-of-the-art infrastructure that could ingest real-time sensor data, enable sophisticated analytics, and power AI-driven experimentation.

We architected a modern data lakehouse leveraging AWS S3 Tables and Lake Formation to provide a scalable, performant foundation for both real-time streaming and historical analysis. The platform seamlessly ingests sensor data from plant operations—capturing critical metrics on flow rates, humidity, temperature, and pressure in real-time.

To accelerate their R&D cycles, we developed AI models using AWS SageMaker Unified Studio that predict experimental outcomes based on initial conditions and real-time sensor readings. These predictive models enabled the team to make data-informed decisions about next-stage experimentation without waiting for experiments to complete.

The lakehouse architecture ensures both blazing-fast query performance for real-time monitoring and the depth needed for comprehensive historical analysis, empowering Greenlyte's scientists and engineers with the insights they need to optimize their breakthrough technology.

Result

The modern data platform helped transform Greenlyte's approach to innovation, accelerating their R&D velocity while providing unprecedented visibility into their DAC process. The project delivered the following outcomes:

  • Accelerated Experimentation Cycles: AI-powered predictions enabled the team to evaluate experimental trajectories in real-time, significantly reducing the time from hypothesis to validated results.

  • Real-Time Process Visibility: Engineers gained immediate access to sensor data across all plant operations, enabling identification of optimization opportunities and anomalies.

  • Data-Driven Decision Making: The lakehouse architecture enabled in-depth analytics that identifies patterns and insights across hundreds of experiments and help in future planning.

  • Future-Ready Infrastructure: The scalable platform positions Greenlyte to manage exponentially growing data volumes as they expand from pilot plants to commercial scale facilities, ensuring data infrastructure will be there to support their mission of gigascale carbon capture.

The successful deployment of Greenlyte’s modern data platform was driven by the exceptional contributions of the Datamax team. They were pivotal, demonstrating deep technical knowledge and executing the AWS architecture with remarkable efficiency. Their approach was exceptionally detailed and context-oriented, precisely tailoring the Lakehouse foundation to meet the high demands of our real-time R&D cycles. With this new robust infrastructure, we are better equipped to make the right data-driven decisions in our mission to combat climate change.
